A writer and editor by trade, I love to draw—mostly pictures of my dogs, River and Calla. Here, I post drawings, photos and other artwork of the two cutest animals ever (and some of their very adorable friends). Subscribe to get an email when there's a new drawing. Questions? Contact me. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Sorry for the bit of a drought over here on Dog Doodles. There’s been a lot going on, some of it wonderful and some of it not-so-much.
Martin and I visited my family in New York over Christmas, which was lovely. I drew a couple of pictures of River on the airplane that I’ll be posting soon.
While we were home, my aunt called to tell us that she had to put down her beloved Scooby, a wonderful 14-year-old Black Lab. He hadn’t been doing well for a while, and then one night he began yelping in pain and could not get up. They took him to the vet at 2 a.m. and an ultrasound revealed a large mass in his stomach. There wasn’t much they could do at that point, and sometimes the unthinkable is the best gift you can give to a dog in pain. We went to their house for Christmas dinner two days later, and there was no Scooby greeting us at the front door. He was a great dog… I will post a doodle of him soon.
We returned home to two happy dogs, one of whom was more than ready to have her stitches removed. We said goodbye to the “cone of shame,” and I took the dogs to the park to run around before taking them to the vet. Unfortunately, River dove to catch the frisbee and ended up BREAKING HER TOE. I brought her to the vet to have her sutures removed and she came home with a giant arm cast. She’s on bed rest for now—which is difficult to do for such an avid squirrel hunter.
The good news among all of this is that Martin and I got engaged! There was no dramatic proposal or anything. Late one night, he said, “Laura, I’ve been waiting for a quiet moment to take you to Central Park and ask you to marry me, but we haven’t had any alone time. I’m tired of beating around the bush, and I want you to be my wife, so fuck it, will you marry me?” My response: “So wait, did you just propose to me?” And then, “Yes, of course!”
